Summary

Globalisation will always be a controversal topic. There will always be protestors aginst globalisation and people for it. The bottem line is that yes, globalisation is inproving the global economy. Developing countries are growing and there is less poverty. It also makes life for developed countries cheaper aswell. But at what cost? Hundreds of thousands of peopleb spend long hours a day workin in bad conditions. This has a huge impact on their overall health and for little money as well. Some people argue that they don't have to work in the sweat shops, but in reality they do. It is either work in terrible conditions all day for little pay, or get no income and die. In realtiy theese people are stuck in theese jobs with no alternative. On the other side of things, many people are left jobless in developed countries because the company that they have been working for has outsourced to developing countries.

My last point is to ask you who is to blame? Is it the big companies that maybe exploit their workers, or are the people to blame the consumers? Have we become to greedy that we ourselves are letting this happen just so we save a bit of money?

positive effects

There are also many positive effects of globalisation. Firstly the main advantage is that the product is made cheaper for the consumer. Wheather or not you are against cheap labour the bottem line is that things are made cheaper. This is because the companies can find cheaper labour in other countries. This means that consumers are not forced to buy expensive item made within thier own country, there is more choice.

Secondly  is that it creates new jobs in devolping countries. This means that more people are working in the country which means that overall the countries economy is growing. For example Taiwan is a country that has benifited greatly from globalisation. It used to be considered a third world country, but now it is growing into a very stable economic place to live.

The main reason that Taiwan Got out of poverty is because they let big companies such as Nike come in and set up factories. In  Taiwan it was a win win situation for all counteries. Taiwan had more people working, earning income and paying more tax, which helped the government. Big countries like Usa were able to buy Nike products for cheaper.

If you think about it, if there was no globalisation, we wouldnt have many everday things. In fact we wouldn't have much at all! Think about all of the things you have, they arn't all made in your own country. For example if there was no globalisation there would be no McDonnalds except for in america. Any time we import something, it's a part of globalisation.

Sweat shop

This is a called a sweat shop, thousands of workers work here very long hours a day in poor conditions.

Negative effects

There are many negative effects to globalisation. Not only to developing countries, but also to developed countries. Many companies have outsourced jobs to developing countries. They do this because they can find cheaper labour than in their own countries. This means that many people in developed countries are losing their jobs. This also means that there are more people without jobs and fewer jobs in developed countries. This leads to competition in jobs and reduced wages which leads to a poorer standard of living.

In developing countries, globalization has led to exploitation of labour. Prisoners and child workers are used to work in inhumane conditions. Safety standards are ignored to produce cheap goods. This leads to many people being over worked, this has a negative effect on their health and they are not getting paid very much at all. Local businesses aren’t able to compete with large multinational businesses that have come into their country. This means that there are fewer jobs available apart from working in sweat shops.
Overall the main negative effects are that there is a big impact on developing nation’s health and culture. There isn’t much economic benefit either, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

video

This is a video that i found on youtube http://www.youtube.com/. WARNING: this video is a rather one sided view on globalisation that is in favor of it. this does not really go into details of the negative effects. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHyIW-vUhO8

What is globalisation?

First of all, what is globalisation? the definition in the dictionary is that, globalisation (n) is the "process enabling financial and investment markets to operate internationally, largely as a result of deregulation and improved communications" (Collins). Basically it is the way that the global economy is growing. For example an English company trading with an Indian country where as before that English company would have done buisness with another English comanpy.

This progreses to an English company going over to India and setting up a factory there. The iniatial Benifits of this would mean that jobs are Created in a country Like India and Products would be made Cheaper for a country like England or America. This sounds like it is a win win situation for both countries involved. But what are the long term effects if this process, are they good or bad? Is there a line that turns this into exploition and cheap Labour? has it already been crossed? But then where would we be without it? Theese are the questions that i hope to answer during this blog.
